MAUREEN ZACHARKI – Expressing her unique photographic visions of her world while living with Alice in Wonderland Syndrome

  • In My Neighborhood

“I enjoy taking photos of the places and spaces around where I live. My home is in the historical area of the city of Saskatoon and is lined by hundred year old elms in the Nutana and University areas. There is something nostalgic and beautiful about these areas. In the middle, is the Broadway district… which has changed, and not for the good… It’s not as eclectic and fun as it used to be. They have torn down so many buildings with personality and constructed way too many condos it their places. All the great shops are gone… the Fringe festival is no longer relevant.. the Hello Kitty store is long gone… along with the candy shop, toy store, grocery store, convenience store, the book stores, the theatre, the antique stores, the retro clothing stores, jewelry shop, coffee shop, wiccan store, where you could buy handfuls of rose quartz… plus so many other cool and wonderful places that existed just a few block outside my door. I’m sad and I’m angry. And don’t get me started about the rest of the city!”

  • Hum Drum

“Sometimes I like taking photos of the mundane… of everyday life… of simple things. The more personal the objects, the more personal the photographs. Not all photos need to be crazy artistic.”

  • Disappointing

“I’ve shown my photos on Flickr for many years now… I know I’m not very prolific at posting my photographs… and I don’t have a very consistent style. That is probably why I don’t have a tons of followers. But the biggest trouble that I have is… most of the people that do follow me are men… hardly any women like my photos or follow me, even though I follow many women. It saddens me that women don’t support other women. I often wonder why the exact reason women don’t feel comfortable supporting other women in the arts. I have suspicions… the same suspicions are the ones I had to deal with in the theatre. They’re probably the same.”

  • Self-Portraits

“It’s sort of difficult to go outer body to take a photograph of yourself inside your body. It’s much easier to split yourself into pieces… head, face, torso, legs… and focus on the separate parts. If I were a man and photographing a woman and focusing on her individual parts… some would say that I was objectifying her… but we are all made out of parts. When we are kids, we learn that we have two eyes and two ears… two arms and two legs. Our bodies are our abode while we are alive. It’s where our consciousness spends its time. It’s our home in human form.”

  • Texture & Mood

“The beauty about shadows is that it helps create atmosphere… making the mundane look mysterious.”

  • This Alien World

“There are so many strange things on earth that you can photograph… the opportunities are endless. What your brain can twist out of the shadow and light can reveal the workings of your subconscious mind.”

  • Make Me Smile

“Art should sometimes come from your happy place.”

  • Cats Are The Perfect Models

“I don’t take an enormous amount of photos of my cats… but through the years I’ve found them as a reliable subject matter. Cats are the Supermodels of the animal kingdom.”

  • Everything Is Personal

“Everything I photograph is something close to my heart. I think that is why I don’t really have a true style that I stick with… I feel that you can’t photograph everything in the same way because every subject has a personality and aura of its own.”
